Q: I noticed that Gan Hayeled is associated with a synagogue. Do you only have Jewish children at the school? A: We are open to all members of the community and have children of many faiths in our school. We celebrate Jewish holidays and all of our children love to participate. There is, of course, a different level of understanding at each age group, and our teachers discuss aspects of a holiday’s meaning at an appropriate level. Q: You indicate you are a ‘secure’ facility. What does that entail? A: The entrance to our classrooms is locked and has a key-pad code required for entry. Pick up of children is at each classroom, and no child is dismissed without pre-arranged permission from a parent. Q: Can parents really stop in and observe their child anytime? A: Yes. Some of our classrooms (the rooms for the Three and Four Year Olds) actually have one-way mirrors on the doors, so that you can observe the classroom activities without the children seeing you. This allows parents to observe without disrupting activities, or upsetting their child. Parents are also encouraged to visit IN the classroom at any time. Q: Are classes structured, and what about free-play time? A: We have a basic schedule for each day. Blocks of time and areas of activity are planned and occur in sequence. Within that framework there is considerable flexibility, however, and children are encouraged to choose activities that interest them. The children are encouraged to play alone as well as in small or large groups and they have opportunities for experiencing both free and structured activities. |
